Poll: Majority of Tennessee voters oppose removing Trump

A Mason-Dixon poll released Friday indicates that 59 percent of voters in Tennessee voters oppose removing President Trump from office. 

Thirty-seven percent of respondents in the survey support removing Trump from office, while 4 percent are unsure.

The poll was released the day after retiring Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander (R) announced he would not vote to call in witnesses for the Senate impeachment trial. Lamar was widely seen as the deciding vote on the motion to call witnesses, leading many to predict the end of the trial on Friday. 

Alexander wrote in his statement that the president’s conduct regarding Ukraine was inappropriate but didn’t reach the level of impeachment.

“I believe that the Constitution provides that the people should make that decision in the presidential election that begins in Iowa on Monday,” Alexander tweeted. 

Our founding documents provide for duly elected presidents who serve with “the consent of the governed,” not at the pleasure of the United States Congress.

The poll also showed that 57 percent of respondents in the Volunteer State approve of the president’s performance, compared to 42 percent who disapprove.

The poll was conducted on Tuesday, before Alexander made his announcement. It surveyed 635 registered Tennessee voters and reported a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
