Dolphins spotted back in strait between Europe and Asia amid coronavirus
Dolphins have been spotted in the Bosphorus strait between Europe and Asia as traffic in the water has emptied out amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Photos and video footage shows the dolphins popping up in the water where they’re rarely seen near Istanbul, EuroNews reported.
Istanbul is also under its annual, seasonal fishing ban, which is imposed yearly between April 15 and Sept. 1 to conserve fish eggs and ensure sustainable fishery.
There are three different dolphin species existing in the region, including the bottlenose, EuroNews reported, citing the Turkish Marine Research Foundation.
In addition to the waterway, the streets of the city are also reportedly deserted with most of the country on lockdown amid the pandemic.
Turkey reported 110,130 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 2,805 deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
