Woman who sneaked into Yellowstone during closure injured after fall at Old Faithful

A woman who illegally sneaked into Yellowstone National Park on Tuesday was airlifted out after falling into one of Old Faithful’s thermal features.

Park officials told NBC’s Montana affiliate that the unidentified woman didn’t know which thermal feature she fell into but that it happened while she was backing up to take pictures. They confirmed that the woman entered the park Tuesday morning and suffered burns during the incident.

Officials also said the woman drove after the incident, eventually meeting park rangers about a mile south of Mammoth Hot Springs. She was then airlifted to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

According to the park’s website, steam from the features has been measured at more than 350 degrees.

Both Yellowstone and Grand Teton are among the national parks that have been closed since March 24 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
