UPDATED: Rep. Wasserman Schultz injured in softball game

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) was taken to Georgetown Hospital moments ago with a possible broken ankle following the first annual Congressional Womens Softball Game, held this evening at Guy Mason Field in Glover Park.

The Florida Democrat, who hadn’t played softball since her stint on the varsity team in high school, slid into second base late in the game, injuring her right ankle. Despite the obvious discomfort of her injury, Rep. Wasserman Schultz gave a short speech after the game and congratulated her colleagues and staff accompanied by her “biggest fans,” her two children.

The game, which pitted DNC and RNC party staffers against members, ended in a 14 to 8 victory for the staffers, but appearances by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) added to a palpable excitement among the members of congress. Great plays were made by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), who hit a double in the second inning, and Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.), who pitched the last batter out in the 2nd inning as well.

Check back for updates on Rep. Wasserman Schultz’s condition.
