2 Washington Nationals players test positive for COVID-19

Two players with the Washington Nationals have tested positive for COVID-19, the team said Sunday.

It was unclear which players were infected, and no other information was released by the team, according to Fox 5 DC. The players reported to a modified version of spring training that had been delayed by coronavirus restrictions this month as the MLB is set to begin a 60-game season later this month.

Opening day is currently set for July 23 as the season is currently expected to be the first in history in which no fans will be in attendance. Three of the team’s players — infielder Ryan Zimmerman, pitcher Joe Ross, and catcher Welington Castilo — have opted out of playing the 2020-2021 season.

“Ryan Zimmerman and Joe Ross have decided not to participate in the 2020 season for the personal health and safety of themselves and their loved ones,” general manager Mike Rizzo previously said. “We are one hundred percent supportive of their decision to not play this year. We will miss their presence in the clubhouse and their contributions on the field.”

MLB officials said in a statement announcing the modified season that keeping players and staff healthy would be among its “foremost priorities.”

“The health and safety of players and employees will remain MLB’s foremost priorities in its return to play,” the league said in a statement announcing the 60-game season. “MLB is working with a variety of public health experts, infectious disease specialists and technology providers on a comprehensive approach that aims to facilitate a safe return.”
