Auto-tune mastermind speaks to C-SPAN

If you haven’t seen the “auto tune the news” episodes, you’re depriving yourself. The creators of the “webisodes” take news clips and impose “auto tuning” audio techniques to create hilarious music videos.

Evan Gregory, one of the four masterminds behind this phenomenon, spoke to C-SPAN’s Washington Joural this morning.

“We had a feeling that if Paris Hilton could have a recording contract, then why shouldn’t our nation’s leaders…Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner, have their own recording contracts and pop careers?” Gregory said.

Gregory, who creates the videos with his wife and two brothers–collectively known as the “Gregory Brothers”–pores over video clips to find the segments most suitable for autotuning.

The idea started when one of Gregory’s brothers started making satires of the 2008 presidential debates.

“It evolved inot the idea where they weren’t just songs about the debate, they were actually conversations with the debaters,” says Gregory. “That’s where he hit on the idea to bring the debaters themselves and take their spoken voices and tune them into pseudo-singing voices.”
