The Washington Nationals’ Racing Presidents, clad in large face masks over their costumes, delivered an award considered the “Oscar of federal service” to the nation’s top infectious diseases expert, Anthony Fauci, for his role in the United States’ response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Fauci was named the 2020 Federal Employee of the Year, the top honor of the Samuel. J. Heyman Service to America Medals, also known as the “Sammies,” by the Partnership for Public Service on Thursday.
The D.C. team, which Fauci has said he is a fan of, tweeted a video Thursday showing the presidential-themed figures traveling from Nationals Park to Fauci’s home to deliver the award. Fauci is seen in his own Nationals mask as he accepts the award.
“Dr. Fauci has become a household name for his steady hand and unwavering commitment to his country during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Partnership for Public Service President and CEO Max Stier said in a statement. “Dr. Fauci represents the very best of public service, and it is an honor to award him the 2020 Federal Employee of the Year. We thank him for his dedication and for inspiring the next generation of public servants.”
Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and five other medalists will be honored during a virtual award ceremony on Monday at 8 p.m. that will be streamed online.
Twenty celebrities, journalists and professional athletes will express their appreciation for Fauci’s public service during the program, including Stephen Colbert, Katie Couric, Bryan Cranston and Sloane Stephens.
