Virginia professor resigns after anti-Biden post

A college professor at a Virginia school resigned on Monday after posting that supporters of President-elect Joe Biden are “ignorant,” “anti-American” and “anti-Christian” earlier this month.

Virginia Wesleyan University announced Monday that the university accepted Paul Ewell’s resignation as a professor of management, business and economics. The professor resigned as dean of the college’s Global Campus last week.

Ewell’s resignations from the Virginia Beach university came after he published a since-deleted Facebook post requesting that backers of the president-elect or Democrats should unfriend him, NBC affiliate WAVY-TV reported.

“If you were ignorant anti-American, and anti-Christian enough to vote for Biden, I really don’t want to be your social friend on social media,” he wrote a few days after the election.

President Trump retweeted WAVY-TV’s article on Ewell’s comments along with the caption “Progress!”

Ewell had told WAVY-TV that he posted out of anger and that he had remorse that it “set a poor example in that post of what a Christian should be.”

“I have many Democrat friends and I want to apologize for saying that I didn’t want to be friends with them and for calling them names,” he said. “I am genuinely sorry for letting my anger get the best of me.”

The university posted a statement on Facebook in response to Ewell’s post, saying it was “aware of a recent comment made on social media by a member of the campus community.”

“These views and opinions are expressly the individual’s own,” the statement read. “Civic engagement and religious freedom are at the core of the University’s values, and we remain an inclusive and caring community that empowers meaningful relationships through listening, understanding, and communication.”
