Miami shooting leaves 7 people wounded

At least seven people were wounded in a Friday night shooting in Miami, according to the city’s police department.

Miami Police Department spokeswoman Kiara Delva told CNN that officers were notified through gunshot detection system alerts of shots fired in the Wynwood neighborhood, an art-filled spot popular with tourists.

Delva said that when police arrived at the scene shortly before midnight, they found several people with apparent gunshot wounds.

Local ABC affiliate station WPLG reported that police said some of the people who were wounded had already transported themselves to hospitals in the area.

Police told the local news outlet that one of the victims arrived at University of Miami Hospital, with the six others at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The conditions of those wounded were not immediately clear.

The police department told reporters that the investigation is ongoing and did not reveal if it had a suspect or anyone in custody.

The Hill has reached out to the Miami Police Department for additional information.

The attack comes amid a series of shootings that has renewed debates about the need for more restrictive gun laws.

On Wednesday, a 57-year-old Valley Transportation Authority employee allegedly opened fire at a San Jose, Calif., facility, killing nine people before dying from what is believed to have been a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
