Zebras recovered after months on the loose in Maryland

A pair of zebras that have been on the loose for months after escaping from a farm in Maryland have been recovered. 

“They’re safe. They are not on the loose,” Prince George’s County government spokesperson Linda Lowe said, WUSA 9 reported on Tuesday.

At least three zebras escaped from Jerry Holly’s farm in Upper Marlboro in August. One was found dead back in September. 

The U.S. Department of Agriculture and Prince George’s County government will give more information about the caught zebras soon, as it is unclear where the animals have been taken, according to the local CBS News outlet. 

Washington, D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D) jokingly made clear on Twitter that she had nothing to do with the incident, which had captured local attention for weeks.

The dead zebra was found in an illegal snare trap within two feet of the fence that was holding the 39 zebras Holly had in his possession.

Holly has been charged with three counts of animal cruelty since the zebras escaped, with authorities saying the dead zebra “should have been seen or heard while it was dying from being caught in the snare if the caretaker had attended to the zebras in the fenced enclosure, and most likely died of dehydration after a period of a few days struggling in the trap.”

During the investigation, another zebra was found dead on the property, left long enough for rigor mortis to occur.
