Arrest made after assault of 49ers fan during NFC title game

An arrest was made after an assault of a San Francisco 49ers fan during the NFC championship game on Sunday.

Police on Thursday arrested Bryan Alexis Cifuentes Rossell after he allegedly assaulted 40-year-old David Luna outside of SoFi Stadium, Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts Jr. said in a Friday statement.

In a press conference on Thursday, Butts said a blurry video of the attack showed Alexis allegedly punching Luna in the head and Luna’s head hitting the ground, The Associated Press reported. Police used the video and a license plate to find Alexis.

The Friday statement said the owner of the vehicle gave Alexis’s contact information to the police, and he voluntarily went to the Inglewood Police department after local police picked him up.

Luna is currently in a medically induced coma at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Butts said Thursday that Luna’s face was fractured and the coma was to ensure no internal bleeding would occur from the swelling in his brain.

The video started with Luna in a 49ers jersey in a group of about 16 people when he pushed Alexis, who was wearing a Los Angeles Rams jersey, from behind, Butts said. When Luna was walking away, Alexis pushed him from behind and then punched Luna when he turned towards him again.

When Alexis allegedly punched Luna in the mouth, he fell backwards and hit the back of his head, according to the mayor.

“It looked like a small altercation that went very bad,” Butts said. “From one punch and someone falling, hitting their head on the ground. It wasn’t like you had people ganging up on somebody and beating them.”

Before the pushing began and the punch was thrown, the mayor said “there didn’t seem to be any hostilities.”

Alexis was charged with assault by means to produce great bodily injury, which is a felony. He posted bail with $30,000.

As of Friday, the mayor said Luna’s condition is stable and has not improved or worsened.

The assault was first reported by The Los Angeles Times. The outlet said Luna traveled to the game alone after friends backed out of the event.

“We are aware and saddened by the incident. Our thoughts are with Mr. Luna’s friends and family during this difficult time. We are working with law enforcement officials in their investigation,” SoFi Stadium said in a statement.

The mayor said security in the stadium will not be increased due to the incident.

“I’m very comfortable there was sufficient security” in the parking lot,” Butts said, the AP noted. “There is plenty of security in the parking lot. You’re not going to stop every altercation, argument between fans. It’s just not going to happen.”
