Chu wins Dem nod for Solis seat

As expected, California Board of Equalization Vice Chairwoman Judy Chu won the Democratic nomination for Rep. turned Labor Secretary Hilda Solis’s (D-Calif.) former House seat.

Chu will likely cruise to victory in the July 14 general election since the 32nd District is heavily Democratic.

According to the California Secretary of State, Chu defeated state Sen. Gil Cedillo (D) by a 32 percent to 23 percent margin in the low turnout blanket primary.

In the blanket primary, if one candidate garnered 50 percent plus one vote, he or she would have been declared the winner. Since that didn’t happen, Chu will face off against the top performers of the other parties on the ballot.

Interestingly, Republican Monterey Park City Council member Betty Chu won the Republican nomination, likely at least in part because she shares the same last name as Judy Chu. Betty Chu wasn’t the GOP’s preferred candidate in the race, though, Teresa Hernandez was.
