McCain Surprised to Be Running Even with Obama
After having to come from behind to win the Republican nomination, John McCain is surprised to be running dead even in national polls with Democratic nominee Barack Obama.
“I’m surprised, frankly, to see the polls as close as they are, given our brand problems in the Republican Party,” McCain said during an interview Thursday with Charlie Gibson on ABC’s “World News.”
“I’m pleased where we are,” McCain said, who in the same interview recalled “carrying my own bags in Group C on Southwest Airlines” during the dark days of his primary run.
