Hamburg to lead FDA

The former New York City health commissioner has been selected to oversee the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the New York Times reported late Wednesday.

Former NYC commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg will lead the FDA in a move seen as expected. Hamburg will take over an FDA most recently beset by a slamonella outbreak in peanuts nationwide.

Hamburg was appointed health commissioner in 1991, and stayed on through the administration of Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Deputy commissioner Joshua Sharstein, a former aide to House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), was also seen to be in the running.
