Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) spoke out Sunday about her battle with breast cancer, explaining that she wanted to be able to emerge from her medical issues confidently with her children and colleagues.
“I think every woman, once she receives a diagnosis of breast cancer, needs to be able to deal with it in her own way. For me, my primary concern was protecting my young children,” Wasserman Schultz said in an appearance on Fox News. “Cancer is a very scary thing and I really wanted to be able to get through all of my surgeries and treatments and come out on the other side and confidently tell them that mommy was going to be okay, and be able to really mean it.”
The Florida lawmaker went public recently with her battle, which she had kept private as she underwent treatments and a double mastectomy.
“I didn’t take any days off from work,” she said. “I went through seven major surgeries last year, and I didn’t miss a day of work.”
