Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), who played a prominent role in last week’s congressional debate over a bailout bill for the U.S. auto industry, issued a statement Friday avoiding any harsh criticism of President Bush’s action Friday in propping up the industry Corker said he was disappointed by the administration’s action, but did join other Republicans in the harsh tone they have struck in criticizing Bush.

“The best solution would have been definite terms, within in a finite time period, committed to law, that protected taxpayers,” said Corker. “Instead, we have ended up with an agreement open to interpretation, that eliminates the sense of crisis, where taxpayer dollars are expended and we are left to hope that the next administration has the will to enforce the tough concessions necessary to make these companies viable for the long term.
