Obama Creates Faith-Based & Neighborhood Office

President Obama this morning signed executive orders creating a White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, saying the answer to the economic crisis will not come from government alone.

“No matter how much money we invest or how sensibly we design our policies, the change that Americans are looking for will not come from government alone. There is a force for good greater than government. It is an expression of faith, this yearning to give back, this hungering for a purpose larger than our own, that reveals itself not simply in places of worship, but in senior centers and shelters, schools and hospitals, and any place an American decides,” Obama said.

Obama’s office will seek to make community groups “an integral part of our economic recovery,” according to the White House, acting as a resource for help faith-based and secular community organizations looking for ways to make bigger impacts on their communities.

The office will also advise the administration on social policies such as support for women and children and reducing abortion and teenage pregnancies, the White House said.

Joshua DuBois, a former associate pastor and Obama’s director of religious affairs during the 2008 campaign, will head the office.

Obama tapped an array of religious and secular organization leaders to serve on a White House advisory council connected to the office. See a list of the council’s members below, as released by the White House:
