While I am glad that the reign of this terrible despot is finally coming to an end, I have significant concerns that it will not lead to any true democratic reform in Cuba’s institutions. I fear that Raúl Castro will continue to employ the heavy handed tactics and policies of his brother and the Cuban people will continue to be oppressed. This is obviously a pivotal moment in the history of Cuba and U.S./Cuba relations. However, which way our nation’s policy toward Cuba turns depends almost wholly on whether or not the Cuban government decides to grant its people the freedom they deserve.
