Immigration Issue Requires Solutions, Not Criticism

After the Senate’s disappointing 50-45 cloture vote on the immigration bill last week, I was drawn even more to one of my favorite quotes by Albert Einstein: “We can never solve our significant problems from the same level of thinking we were at when we created the problems.

But the real lobbying efforts, ironically, may need to be most focused on the advocacy community, itself. According to the National Immigration Forum, public opinion surveys that have been released since November 2006 continue to show majority support for immigration solutions that include enhanced border security, workplace and employer enforcement, earned legalization for undocumented immigrants with a path to citizenship, and expanded visas for future immigrant workers and families. And yet, some organizations have all but equated support of the cloture vote as tantamount to support of the underlying bill and are doing everything in their power to “pull the plug
