House passes education research bill

The House passed a bill late Thursday to expand education research programs.

Passed by voice vote, the bill, H.R. 4366 would reauthorize the Institute of Education Sciences and as well as programs such as the National Assessment of Education Progress.

{mosads}The Institute of Education Sciences conducts evaluations of federal education programs, such as the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program and parts of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act. 

Rep. Todd Rokita (R-Ind.) said expanding access to research would help educators improve student achievement. 

“Classrooms nationwide, teachers and school leaders need quality research to identify the best ways to raise student achievement and encourage progress,” Rokita said.

Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, said it would make the education research more accessible outside of trade publications.

“Research must be relevant, timely and useful. it must be used to solve real problems faced by students and teachers,” Miller said.
