Grand jury subpoenas Rep. Stockman, aides

Outgoing Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) and three of his aides have received subpoenas as part of a grand jury investigation, the House said Wednesday.

Stockman’s communications and policy aide, schedule coordinator, and legislative assistant all received grand jury subpoenas for “testimony and documents in a criminal investigation,” according to the House Clerk’s office. 

The Clerk’s office said that the U.S. District Court in Washington issued Stockman a subpoena as well, but did not provide more information. Stockman and his aides all informed the House that they would comply with the subpoenas.

The congressman’s office did not respond to requests for clarification on the grounds for the subpoenas. The Justice Department and the House Ethics Committee also declined to comment.

Most grand jury information is kept secret by federal law, but lawmakers and aides are required to notify Congress when they receive subpoenas.

It’s not clear whether the subpoenas are connected to allegations that Stockman broke campaign finance rules, charges that are now being investigated by the House Ethics Committee.

The panel in June said it was probing allegations that Stockman received two campaign donations from congressional employees, but listed them as donations from their family members. That could be a violation of both federal laws and House rules.

Stockman’s lawyer emphatically denied the charges in a 47-page letter and said the two donors were not his employees when they donations were made.
