Bill would prevent government from incentivizing Common Core
Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) has introduced legislation to limit the federal government’s ability to require states to adhere to Common Core educational benchmarks.
“The quality of our children’s education is too important to rely on a one-size-fits-all approach,” Wilson said on the House floor Wednesday.
{mosads}Wilson’s measure would prevent the government from using grants or waivers to incentivize states’ participation in the Common Core initiative, which sets English and math standards for elementary and secondary school students. All but six states – Alaska, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Indiana and Virginia – are members of the initiative.
Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) is sponsoring companion legislation in the Senate.
