Bill would allow raises outside union wages

Rep. Todd Rokita (R-Ind.) has introduced a measure that would allow businesses to give union workers merit-based bonuses outside of collective bargaining agreements.

The bill, titled the Rewarding Achievement and Incentivizing Successful Employees (RAISE) Act, would make wages established in labor union contracts a minimum, rather than uniform pay that can’t be exceeded.

{mosads}Rokita argued that his proposal would give employers an incentive to reward high-performing individual workers.

“This bill allows employers to give merit-based raises and bonuses to employees who contribute positively to the success of their businesses, ensuring that hard work and success are rewarded, not punished,” Rokita said in a statement.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has introduced companion legislation in the Senate.
