Senate approves small bill to help Oso recovery

The Senate passed a small bill Thursday that will help victims of the Oso, Wash., landslide begin recovery.

{mosads}The Green Mountain Lookout Heritage Protection Act, S. 404, authorizes preservation of the Green Mountain lookout point near the area devastated by a massive landslide last month.

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) introduced the bill last year and got unanimous consent from the Senate to pass the legislation Thursday.

“I request unanimous consent to pass a bill that is a very small step in what will be a very long recovery,” Murray said on the Senate floor. “This will provide a glimmer of hope for the long-term recovery of this area.”

Murray said the bill would aid in the recovery of Snohomish County because the Green Mountain lookout point is a tourist destination in the state.

On Wednesday, President Obama granted a major disaster declaration to provide federal relief for the area. More than 30 people died in the slide and 15 are still considered missing.
