Heinrich to White House: Minimize redactions on interrogation report

Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) called on the Obama administration to limit redactions in a Senate Intelligence Committee on the CIA’s interrogation program.

“I was disappointed to learn of the CIA’s extensive use of redactions on the Committee’s executive summary,” Heinrich said Sunday. “Try reading a novel with 15 percent of the words blacked out — it can’t be done properly.”

{mosads}The White House is slated to publicly release the Senate’s report on the CIA’s Detention and Interrogation Program in the next few days.

“It is my hope that constructive conversations will now occur between the Committee, the CIA and the White House to minimize the redactions currently employed so that the report may be released very soon,” Heinrich said.

The report is the result of a five-year investigation by Senate Democrats into the interrogation practices used by the Bush administration after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The report found that the administration used excessive force and tortured detainees for information. 

The White House is working through the report and redacting any sensitive national security information before it is released to the public. 

Heinrich said he hopes only the names of sources are redacted.
