Senators introduce bill to force American-made Olympic uniforms
“I look forward to the quick passage of this patriotic jobs bill so that the United States never finds itself in this embarrassing situation again,” Menendez said.
{mosads}S. 3387 comes after news reports that this year’s Olympic team will be wearing uniforms designed by Ralph Lauren that are made in China.
Several senators expressed outrage over the issue. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) called the debacle “irresponsible.”
House members were just as vocal.
Rep Tim Murphy (R-Pa.) sent a letter on Tuesday to the Olympic Committee urging them to “buy American.”
“The Olympic Committee’s decision to use uniforms made in China, which has notoriously violated international trade agreements to the detriment of American manufacturing, is especially galling when 23 million Americans are out of work or looking for more work,” the letter stated. “We urge the US Olympic Committee to display greater concern for America’s domestic workers by adopting new guidelines to ensure in the future in the future, all Olympic uniforms and equipment are manufactured in the United States.”
The Olympic Committee has promised to buy American-made uniforms for the 2014 games.
Sens.
