Schumer: Dems on ‘path to unity’
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) tamped down talk of intraparty strife on Wednesday, saying Democrats are on a “path to unity.”
{mosads}”We are on a path to unity,” Schumer, expected to be the next Senate Democratic leader, told reporters at a Zika virus press conference.
He added that he believes Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who’s challenging Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination, is a “very constructive man.”
“I think we have a mutual goal, which is to make sure Democrats stay in the White House,” Schumer said.
His comments come after Clinton won four states Tuesday night, including a big victory in California that boosts her campaign’s momentum.
Despite Clinton’s status as the party’s presumptive nominee, Sanders pledged Tuesday night to “continue the fight.”
Senate Democrats — most of whom back Clinton — have increasingly called on Sanders to drop out of the race or at least aim his fire at presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.
But Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) on Wednesday called Sanders a “friend.”
“I have a lot of faith in him. He has pledged that he wants unity,” she said. “He wants to support our nominee.”
Asked what “valuable” role Sanders could play going into November, Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), chairman of the Senate Democrats’ campaign arm, told reporters Tuesday that the Vermont senator should be “bringing people on to get us united.”
“That’s the role,” Tester added.
