Trump attending Senate GOP lunch Tuesday
President Trump is heading to Capitol Hill to attend the weekly Senate GOP policy lunch next week.
Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), the chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee, announced that the president would meet with Republicans on Tuesday.
“Our conference looks forward to discussing the key accomplishments of tax cuts and historic economic growth here at home, and the opportunity for peace on the Korean Peninsula that lies ahead,” he said in a statement.
Vice President Pence regularly attends the closed-door Senate GOP lunches.
{mosads}Trump previously attended the Senate GOP lunch late last year to talk about the GOP tax plan and the fall agenda. The president characterized the meeting as “a love fest with standing ovations and great ideas for USA!”
After that October lunch, GOP Sen. Jeff Flake (Ariz.), who has been a frequent critic of Trump, announced that he was retiring at the end of his current term.
Flake and Trump also got in a heated clash during a 2016 meeting at a closed-door Senate GOP lunch.
The meeting, which was arranged to try to get Republicans and the then-candidate on the same page, went off the rails when the president got into a verbal spat with Flake. He also criticized Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) and former Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.).
