“I swear [it was] just like the first time. And, when they went across the bridge the second time, I stood up and started cheering all by myself and I roared like it was a surprise.”
Clinton urged the audience to get to a theater, telling the crowd, “If you haven’t yet, go see the movie ‘Selma,’” saying, “and you will see the enormous pressures imposed on the King family and friends.”
Several lawmakers have embraced the historical drama, which many critics said was snubbed from nominations in several top Oscar categories for the 2015 Oscars.
Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), portrayed in the film by actor Stephan James, has called the film “long overdue.”
Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Ala.), a native of Selma whose district includes the city, has said she was “excited” for the her hometown’s story to hit the big screen.
“I thought that it’s a long time coming for the critical part that Selma played in the civil rights and voting rights movement to be documented in this way,” she told local website Al.com. “So I’m excited about it. I’m excited that others will see it as well.”
