Sanders joins Larry David on ‘SNL’

Larry David revived his Bernie Sanders impression on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, while Sanders himself donned a period costume to bemoan economic inequality on a literal sinking ship.

{mosads}The 2016 campaign was all over Saturday’s episode of the NBC variety show, starting with a cold-opener skit in which Taran Killam played Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and continuing with a parody of David’s HBO comedy, here re-dubbed “Bern Your Enthusiasm.”

In it, David impersonated the Vermont senator on the campaign trail in Iowa, refusing to shake the hand of a black supporter after she coughed on it.

“She gave me a cough and shake,” he explained later, a line straight out of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

“You need the black vote, Bernie!” one of his advisers responded. “I don’t care if the hand got dookie on it.”

The real-life Sanders appeared later, in a skit that found David trying to bargain around the  “women and children first” rule for lifeboats. His character argues that, as a rich man, his life is worth more.

“Hold on, hold on, wait a second,” Sanders called out, appearing to applause dressed as an impoverished immigrant. “I am so sick of the 1 percent getting this preferential treatment. Enough is enough.”

David, with a thin Irish accent, said the newcomer sounded like he was spouting socialism.

“Democratic socialism,” Sanders corrected.

“Who are you?” David asked.

“I am Bernie Sanderswinsky,” Sanders responded. “But we’re going to change it when we get to America so it doesn’t sound quite so Jewish.”

“Yeah, that’ll trick ‘em.”

Sanders later helped David introduce the night’s musical guest, the 1975, telling David he was doing “pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good” in New Hampshire ahead of Tuesday’s primary.

The guest spot came the same evening as the GOP’s New Hampshire primary debate, which Sanders mocked on Vine, telling people to “watch ‘Saturday Night Live’ instead.”

His campaign sought to use the appearance to encourage donations, using an image of David’s impersonation while calling for supports to give even their “vacuum pennies” to the cause.
