George Clooney is calling Donald Trump a “xenophobic fascist,” but says he’s confident Americans will eventually “do the right thing” in the voting booth.
“He’s just an opportunist,” Clooney says of the GOP presidential front-runner in an interview with The Guardian published Thursday.
{mosads}“Let’s put things into perspective,” the “Hail, Caesar!” star and longtime Democrat says. “You know, the truth of the matter is, in election season, things go crazy, and the loudest voices are the furthest and most extreme.”
When it comes to Trump, Clooney says, “You can count on Americans to do the right thing after they’ve exhausted all the other possibilities.”
The Academy Award winner recalls a measurable slight after he first came face-to-face with the former “Celebrity Apprentice” host.
“I met Donald once. I was sitting in a booth and we talked for a while. Then he did Larry King, and he said I was very short. And I was like: ‘I was sitting down the whole time, Donald!’ ” Clooney quips to the British newspaper.
Clooney, who in 2008 endorsed then-Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-Ill.) White House bid, is now rooting for the president’s one-time rival for the Democratic nomination.
“I am a Hillary supporter,” Clooney, 54, says. “I am doing a fundraiser for her.”
But Clooney also expresses admiration for Clinton’s Democratic primary rival: “I really love Bernie Sanders, and am really glad he is in the debate. He is forcing the conversation to things that never get talked about in U.S. politics: disparity between the rich and the poor, which is getting worse and worse every day.”
