Christie dodges question on whether Redskins should change their name
President Obama recently suggested the Redskins should change their name, which has been labeled a slur by some members of Congress.
While he shied away from pigskin buzz, Christie opened up about the importance of volunteerism at Friday’s gala held by the nonprofit, which shaped its mission of volunteer service around former President George Bush’s 1989 inaugural address that mentioned the phrase.
{mosads}“I accept this award tonight on behalf of those people, those people who helped rebuild my state. Helped rebuild the place I was born and raised,” Christie said.
He also recounted a story of a woman he met who declared while she didn’t vote for him in the last election, once Hurricane Sandy hit, she prayed for him every night.
He said to chuckles from the crowd that the woman said after a fire ravaged the same Jersey shore boardwalk last month that had just been rebuilt following Sandy, she prayed, saying, “Lord, please give our governor strength, because I don’t know how much more crap this boy can take.”
Also spotted at the awards: Fox News Channel host and emcee Greta Van Susteren, “Dancing with the Stars” alum Elisabetta Canalis, former “American Idol” contestant Pia Toscano and Points of Light Chairman Neil Bush.
