Colbert: GOP losses show Trump the ‘downside of narcissism’

Late-night television host Stephen Colbert said Wednesday that the Republican Party’s losses this week should reveal to President Trump “the downside of narcissism.”

“Mr. Trump, all of these elections were about you,” Colbert said during “The Late Show,” before quoting a news report that said voters cited Trump as a factor behind their votes.

“That’s the problem with making everything about you, sir,” Colbert continued.

“It means everything, even losing, is about you. That’s the downside of narcissism. Along with no one really loving you.”

Colbert’s comments come after the Republican nominees in both the New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial races lost to the Democrats. Both races received national attention, as former President Obama campaigned with then-Democratic nominees Phil Murphy in New Jersey and Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam in Virginia.

Trump on Tuesday dismissed Ed Gillespie’s loss in Virginia, saying the Republican “did not embrace me or what I stand for.”

“Ed Gillespie worked hard but did not embrace me or what I stand for,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

“Don’t forget, Republicans won 4 out of 4 House seats, and with the economy doing record numbers, we will continue to win, even bigger than before!” he wrote, referring to special election races earlier this year.

The Democrats won a number of elections across the nation on Tuesday in what one Republican congressman called a “referendum” on the Trump administration.
