Members of the Sacramento Kings and Boston Celtics on Sunday released a gun violence public service announcement, one day after the “March for Our Lives” rally in Washington, D.C.
The 30-second video, which aired during the first timeout of the Kings-Celtics game, discusses the shooting of Stephon Clark, an unarmed black man who was killed when police fired 20 shots at him while he was holding a cell phone.
“These tragedies have to stop, there must be accountability,” players say in the video. “Black, white, brown, we are one.” {mosads}
“We will not shut up and dribble,” another player said, referencing a comment made by Fox News’s Laura Ingraham earlier this year.
Ingraham feuded with NBA stars LeBron James and Dwyane Wade after she criticized them for making political statements.
The teams also sported warmup shirts reading “Accountability, we are one,” according to Celtics Wire. The shirts had Clark’s name printed on the back.
“This is bigger than basketball,” players say in the video. “Change can be uncomfortable … we need to talk, we need to act. Say his name: Stephon Clark.”
Protests in response to Clark’s death blocked a Kings game last week.
