Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci said on Sunday that the White House Correspondents’ Association’s (WHCA) president should apologize to Sarah Huckabee Sanders for jokes at the White House press secretary’s expense during an event on Saturday evening.
“I have an enormous amount of respect for Margaret and what she does at the White House Correspondents’ Association,” Scaramucci told CNN’s “Reliable Sources,” referring to WHCA President Margaret Talev.
“But it would have been very nice if [Sanders was] given an apology, given what happened.”
Scaramucci said that Talev should have looked Sanders “straight in the face” and apologized for comedian Michelle Wolf’s comments at the annual WHCA dinner.
{mosads}Scaramucci said that, without an apology, the WHCA is creating hostilities on “both sides.”
Wolf was criticized by some for being overly harsh in jokes about the administration. A number of White House aides walked out of the dinner early.
He added that he is happy President Trump did not go to the dinner because he might have walked out too.
“That would have been even more devastating to the tension that is going on between the White House and the press,” Scaramucci said.
Talev, a Bloomberg correspondent, said some of Wolf’s comments made her “uncomfortable.”
Trump said people were calling the dinner a “very big, boring bust” and claimed that Wolf “bombed.”
The president skipped the dinner for the second year, choosing instead to host a rally in Michigan.
