Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R), the father of White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said that his daughter is doing fine despite jokes at her expense during the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner.
“She didn’t go home and cry her eyes out or anything like that. It’s just not who she is,” Huckabee told The Hollywood Reporter after comedian Michelle Wolf targeted some of her jokes at Sanders Saturday night.
“Every time Sarah steps up to the podium, I get excited. I’m not really sure what we’re going to get, you know? A press briefing, a bunch of lies or divided into softball teams,” Wolf said.{mosads}
“I actually really like Sarah. I think she’s very resourceful,” Wolf added. “But she burns facts and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smokey eye. Like maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s lies.”
Huckabee defended his daughter, saying that she handled the event better than most people would.
“My daughter’s a remarkable person and she’s strong,” Huckabee told The Hollywood Reporter. “Things like that aren’t going to cause her to lose sleep.”
Huckabee, however, said that he thought Sanders was disappointed she was invited as a guest of the WHCA only to be “bullied in front of 3,000 people and millions on television.”
Wolf’s routine triggered a deluge of both criticism and praise from politicians and media personalities.
President Trump, for example, referred to her as a “filthy ‘comedian’ ” and said she “totally bombed.”
He did not attend the event for a second straight year.
