Senators joke about all the matchmaking in Grassley’s office: ’20 marriages!’

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) quipped Thursday that he may start looking for love by working in the office of a Republican colleague known for producing romantic unions.

Before getting to the agenda during a Senate Judiciary Committee executive business meeting, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) lauded efforts by lawmakers to reach across the aisle.

“I think one of the things that’s come out of these hearings that has been truly beneficial is bipartisan legislation,” Hawley said.

That’s when Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) chimed in.

“As long as we’re making bipartisan kudos, I want to make sure that we recognize that Sen. [Chuck] Grassley’s office has been noted to be the hottest spot for people coming to Washington to find each other and get married,” Whitehouse said.

“Bravo, Chuck,” Whitehouse added to the Iowa Republican.

“Twenty marriages!” Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) exclaimed of Grassley’s matchmaking track record.

“Mr. Chairman,” Booker said to panel Chair Dick Durbin (D-Ill.).

After being recognized by Durbin, Booker cracked to laughs, “I’d just like to know if there’s any job openings in Sen. Grassley’s office?”

Booker, one of the upper chamber’s bachelors, dated actor Rosario Dawson for more than two years before the pair split last year.

“Senator, we’ll have to get you an Iowa mailing address,” Durbin told Booker.

Grassley, 90, told The Washington Post in a story last week on the staggering amount of “I do’s” in his office that the first married couple met during his 1980 Senate campaign.
