‘Avengers: Endgame’ breaks box office records with $1.2 billion opening weekend

Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Endgame” smashed box office records for a debut, hauling in an unprecedented $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office this weekend.

Disney said in a press release on Sunday that Endgame is the first film to surpass $1 billion in its opening weekend.

The film surpassed its prequel, “Avengers: Infinity War,” which formerly held the record at $640 million for its opening last year.

“Kevin Feige and the Marvel Studios team have continued to challenge notions of what is possible at the movie theater both in terms of storytelling and at the box office,” Alan Horn, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, said.

“Though Endgame is far from an end for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these first 22 films constitute a sprawling achievement, and this weekend’s monumental success is a testament to the world they’ve envisioned, the talent involved, and their collective passion, matched by the irrepressible enthusiasm of fans around the world.”
