Princess Kate hospitalized following abdominal surgery

Britain’s Kate, the Princess of Wales, is in the hospital following abdominal surgery, according to Kensington Palace.

The 42-year-old royal, who shares three children with Prince William, was admitted to a London hospital Tuesday for the planned procedure, a statement issued Wednesday said.

“The surgery was successful and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days, before returning home to continue her recovery,” Kensington Palace said.

“She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private,” the statement said. Reports from multiple U.K.-based journalists said the surgery was not related to cancer.

Kensington Palace said Kate would be “unlikely to return to public duties” until after Easter, in late March.

Apologizing for postponing her “upcoming engagements,” the statement said that the former Kate Middleton “looks forward to reinstating as many as possible, as soon as possible.”
