‘Handmaid’s Tale’ cast films PSA for Planned Parenthood

The cast of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” filmed a public service announcement in support of abortion rights in collaboration with Harper’s Bazaar and Planned Parenthood.

The clip features actors Elisabeth Moss, Samira Wiley, Ann Dowd, Madeline Brewer, Amanda Brugel, Max Minghella and Bradley Whitford.

{mosads}“Banning abortion is not going to stop abortion,” Whitford says in the spot.

“Banning abortion will only stop safe, legal abortions,” adds Brewer.

“Access to safe and legal abortion is a constitutional right,” Moss says.

The PSA comes as several states have passed restrictive abortion laws, including measures in Ohio, Georgia and Louisiana that would ban the procedure at six weeks and an Alabama law that would ban abortion in almost all cases except a threat to the mother’s health.

The cast and crew of “The Handmaid’s Tale” have frequently spoken out against such legislation, with Dowd calling the bills “disgusting” in May and telling CNN last week that the U.S. is “a heck of a lot closer” to Gilead, the setting of the show which has a repressive fundamentalist government, than when the show premiered.

The distinctive red-and-white costumes worn by the show’s handmaids have become frequent sights among protesters of abortion bans and other legislation related to women’s rights at state legislatures since the series premiered in 2017.
