Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter are nearing the record for longest-married presidential couple as the pair celebrates another wedding anniversary.

The 94-year-old ex-commander in chief and his wife marked 73 years of matrimony on Sunday. The two wed in Plains, Ga., in 1946.

{mosads}Former President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush currently hold the title as the country’s longest-married executive mansion residents. The Bushes were married for 73 years and 111 days when Barbara Bush died in 2018. The 41st president died seven months later, in November 2018.

Rosalynn Carter, then 17 years old, reportedly declined her soon-to-be husband’s original marriage proposal in 1945. Carter, now 91, ultimately accepted his second proposal during a visit the next year with him at the U.S. Naval Academy.

The couple has four children.
