Stephen Colbert is signing on to continue as host of “The Late Show” for at least the next four years.
CBS announced Thursday that it was extending the contract of its late-night host through 2023.
{mosads}The 55-year-old comedian’s monologue, CBS Chief Creative Officer David Nevins said in a statement, “has become a vibrant part of the national discussion, and a spot on Stephen’s couch places guests from the worlds of entertainment, news and politics in front of late night’s largest and most desirable audience.”
“I’ve been asked by CBS to host ‘The Late Show’ until 2023,” Colbert said, “and I have every intention of honoring their subpoena.”
The long-running program has taken on an increasingly politically charged tone in his monologue and one-liners, and enjoyed big ratings, in the Trump era.
Colbert — a frequent critic of the president — has also played host to a bevy of political guests. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), all 2020 contenders, have appeared on “The Late Show” in recent months. Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is poised to sit down with Colbert next week.
