Princess Kate to make second public appearance since cancer diagnosis at Wimbledon
Kate, Princess of Wales, will make her second public appearance since announcing her cancer diagnosis at Wimbledon Sunday.
Kensington Palace confirmed to The Associated Press Saturday that Kate will be in the Royal Box on the Centre Court to watch defending champion Carlos Alcaraz play Novak Djokovic. She will not attend the women’s final Saturday between Jasmine Paolini and Barbora Krejcikova.
Kate has been the patron of the All England Club since 2016, and her ceremonial duties include handing out the winner’s trophy after each men’s and women’s singles final. Kate will not be doing so this year, with All England Club Chair Deborah Jevans handing out the winner’s trophy, Wimbledon organizers said, per The AP.
Kate’s husband, Prince William, who has also been a Wimbledon finals regular, will not be attending this year. He will instead be at the soccer final between England and Spain at the European Championship, as president of the English Football Association.
The Princess of Wales announced in March that she had been diagnosed with cancer, after weeks of speculation about her health due to her absence from public appearances for months prior.
Kensington Palace announced in January that she had “successful” abdominal surgery. The mother of three said that she discovered that she had cancer after that abdominal surgery.
The news about Kate’s diagnosis came on the heels of Buckingham Palace’s announcement in February that King Charles III had been diagnosed with cancer.
Kate’s attendance at King Charles’s 75th birthday ceremony in June marked her first appearance since announcing her diagnosis.
Kate provided an update on her health ahead of that return appearance, saying she “was making good progress,” but that her “treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months.”
“I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days. On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well,” she said.
