‘Parasite’ becomes first non-English language film to win best picture Oscar

For the first time in its 92-year history, the best picture winner at the Academy Awards is a non-English film.

“Parasite” took home the top prize at the Oscars on Sunday in Los Angeles.

“We never imagined this to ever happen. We are so happy. I feel like a very opportune moment in history is happening now,” the South Korean film’s producer, Kwak Sin-ae, said through a translator as the cast and team behind the movie accepted the prestigious award.

The class warfare satire, directed by Bong Joon-ho, dominated the night with a total of four wins, including in the directing, international feature and original screenplay categories.

The Oscars victory was considered an upset; many predicted that “1917” would be the night’s best picture winner.

The other nominees in the category were: “Ford v. Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
