On Wednesday, the Department of Agriculture announced that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is sending out 40 percent more benefits as people come to the program for help amid an emerging recession that has expanded unemployment claims by more than 26 million in the last several weeks.
Feeding America has estimated that 17.1 million additional people will experience food insecurity due to school closures and rising unemployment amid the pandemic.
Democrats pushed to include more funding for food assistance in the $484 billion relief package passed Thursday, but the funds did not make it to the final draft of the bill.
