Liberal commentator Bill Maher says Sen. Ted Cruz’s intelligence makes him the scariest candidate in the Republican presidential field.
“Ted Cruz is scarier than Donald Trump,” Maher said in an interview with
The Daily Beast.
{mosads}“It’s one thing to have evil people who aren’t that bright. [Ted Cruz is] high intelligence in the service of evil,” he continued.
“To think of this guy being the president of the United States, this ambition and love of power combined with being on the wrong side of every issue, it’s a very scary prospect.”
Maher said he was less worried about Trump, the GOP presidential front-runner.
“I think Donald Trump, despite some of the crazy things he says and some of the disgusting things he says, he also says some things a liberal can love,” he said.
Maher also predicted that Trump’s momentum will not slow down despite frequent controversies over his campaign rhetoric.
“I have no idea what this guy would have to do to make his crowd turn on him,” he said. “He’s like a movie monster who only gets stronger with the stuff that you’re using to try to kill him.
“Donald Trump has defied everybody’s predictions, and he’s still there, and he’s getting stronger. With this atmosphere, I think anything is possible.”
Maher added that Trump is surging in the polls because of the visceral connection he has formed with his supporters.
“People don’t think or vote logically — they like Trump,” The “Real Time” host said. “He excites something in the lizard part of their brain.
“He knows how to touch a certain sensitive point in the kind of people who are nothing like him and have absolutely nothing in common with a billionaire. He has his pulse on people the way few politicians before him have.”
