‘Wire’ creator David Simon jokes about wild time at Camp David
Author David Simon makes it sound like he had himself a blast at Camp David.
{mosads}The creator of HBO’s “The Wire” wrote Wednesday he was recently at the presidential retreat for a “little talk on public housing policy” but also took advantage of the recreational facilities on campus.
Simon wrote that he bowled a 118 after drinking “a couple of shots of presidential Jose Cuervo.”
“I did not use the presidential ball, which was clearly labeled atop the rack. They told me that was a definite no-go, and, well, Guantanamo,” he joked.
But Simon’s number apparently did not measure up to President Obama’s high score of 213.
“In between every other mess with which he’s contending, Barack Obama came here to the presidential retreat one day and rolled a 213,” wrote Simon. “Two thirteen! The man is a beast.”
That’s a vast improvement from the paltry 37 that Obama rolled during a 2008 campaign stop in Pennsylvania.
Simon also joked about stealing a martini shaker emblazoned with the presidential seal.
“The Marines at the gate probably assumed my conquest to be a gift-shop purchase or some such. Hah! What rubes,” he wrote. “As if any chump of a visitor can pull out a credit card at the Shangri-La bar and waltz away from the place with $32 worth of presidential bar gear. As if.”
The author’s lighthearted account provides a rare glimpse behind the scenes at Camp David, where photography and media coverage are highly restricted.
Simon did not say when he visited the retreat or give an exact reason for the trip.
Obama is a fan of Simon’s, but it’s unclear if the president was present at the time of the writer’s visit.
The president sat down for an on-camera discussion with Simon last March, telling him he is a “huge fan” of the HBO crime drama set in Baltimore.
The White House has yet to respond to a request for comment.
