Late-night comedy host Stephen Colbert on Wednesday welcomed back a cartoon image of Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump to talk about this summer’s Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
In welcoming the cartoon figure, Colbert suggested that the nominating process of securing delegates had turned the election into a “cartoonish farce.”
{mosads}”Hello, New York, bow before me, you’ve made me your emperor,” the cartoon Trump bellows, referencing his landslide win in the New York primary earlier this week.
“You said you want to bring a ‘touch of showbiz’ to the convention. What do you mean?” Colbert asked.
“That’s right. Democracy is a snoozefest. You gotta snazz it up, and I’ve glitz and glamour coming out of my razzmatazz-hole,” the cartoon Trump responds.
“First, I gold plate the entire city of Cleveland, including the people. Then I ride in on a chariot pulled by showgirls dressed like Lady Liberty. And unlike the real statue, these girls are 10s,” the cartoon figure says.
The sketch makes a reference to Trump’s remarks earlier this week when the actual candidate boasted of all the “
toys” that he has at his disposal to woo delegates, such as offering rides on his private jet.
Trump expanded his delegate lead with his win in New York. Primary rivals Ted Cruz and John Kasich hope to deny him the necessary 1,237 delegates to secure the nomination before the convention, forcing multiple ballots there.
