Producer Shonda Rhimes said this year’s presidential campaign is running parallel to the twist-filled storyline of her hit show “Scandal.”

{mosads}”It feels like the election is mirroring our writing,” Rhimes said at a University of the District of Columbia event for “Scandal” fans Thursday night. “Every Republican debate we’ve seen is crazier than what we’ve done.”

Rhimes was joined at the event, put on in part with Smithsonian Associates, by cast members Kerry Washington, Tony Goldwyn, Bellamy Young, Katie Lowes, Guillermo Diaz and Jeff Perry.

Young plays former first lady and presidential candidate Mellie Grant, and she said she hopes to see a female president in the real White House.

“It is gender politics at work,” she said of the presidential race. “However, I am hoping we crash through that ceiling in November.”

Rhimes said that the plot written for next week’s “Scandal” episode already played out line for line “like three days ago” on the real-life campaign stage.

And Goldwyn, who plays President Fitzgerald Grant, recalled his own visit to the White House, where many joked that “the president is here.”

Show star Washington and Rhimes have both endorsed Clinton and have appeared in campaign ads for the former secretary of State.
