Keep your eyes on Grover Norquist’s elementary school-age daughters, because they know politics.
The Americans for Tax Reform founder’s daughters Grace and Giselle Norquist, eight and seven years old, are avid watchers of the GOP presidential debates. The two have watched every single debate mostly from beginning to end, except for one or two times when the debate ran past their bed times.
{mosads}“It’s been fun to watch through their eyes. They watch the debates the way older people watch sports,” Grover Norquist said in an interview with The Hill. “They’re just fascinated by it, and they want to see the end and want to know who won.”
“They were enamored by Carly Fiorina because they were very excited about having a girl on the red team,” he added.
But as the girls watched the raucous debates devolve into
superficial insults, Norquist said his daughters were shocked the candidates could use words like the S-word on television. “Stupid,” that is.
“They’re not allowed to use words like stupid, so they [kept] checking with us and thought [the candidates] were breaking the rules. ‘Wait, they can’t do that.’”
Grace, who is 13 months older than Giselle, has explained presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s blunt language a bit to her younger sister.
“Oh, Giselle. He just uses strong words,” said Grover Norquist, speaking for Grace.
Grace even compared the Republican front-runner to Andrew Jackson. Grover Norquist assumed she was talking about their similar hairstyles, but no, the second-grader was referring to Jackson’s Indian Removal Act, which she believes is similar to Trump’s immigration policy.
Norquist has been surprised at his daughters’ interest, as they don’t discuss politics much at home. The two girls watched the
first Fox News debate last summer with their cousins and have been hooked ever since.
“We wouldn’t [even necessarily have] watched the debates, except they insisted.”
The girls predicted that Trump would be the nominee, well before Ted Cruz
dropped out.
“I think [they’ve had] a sense that it’s likely trending Trump.”
